I like buying my 6 lb. test Fireline for beading at local fishing stores like Gander Mountain or Fleet Farm because I can get it in larger spools. If you do the same thing and have had trouble finding it recently, you’re not alone.
I heard some buzz online several months ago about Fireline Original being discontinued but wasn’t able to confirm it until last week. Berkley has confirmed that fused Fireline Original is discontinued (don’t panic!). It is being replaced with a new version called thermally fused Fireline Original. Berkley explained that it is a new process for making the line, but the dimensions for it are the same. Berkley did say it would have a slightly smoother feel, though.
I was hoping to find the new Fireline Original locally to try it out, but none of the stores I tried had any 6 lb. Fireline, old or new! It is available to stores now, so hopefully they will be stocking it soon. The new package will say “Thermally Fused” and “Improved!”
We will test it out as soon as it becomes available locally and let you know if we see any difference. In the mean time, if you’ve tried it, let us know what you think!
