In the October 2012 issue, we showed you some pieces we made with the new Czech spike beads. Here are instructions for the dangles I made for my spike bead earrings.

Materials

pair of earrings

2 7 x 17 mm spike beads

2 8 mm pearls

11/0 seed beads

   2 color A

   20 color B

15/0 seed beads

   134 color A

   60 color B

Fireline or WildFire 6 lb. test

  beading needles, #12

  2 hoop earring findings

1. On 1 yd. (.9 m) of Fireline or WildFire, pick up a spike bead and nine color A 15/0 seed beads, leaving a 6-in. (15 cm) tail. Sew through the spike again. Pick up nine A 15/0s, sew through the spike once more, and continue through the first nine A 15/0s picked up in this step. Pick up an A 15/0, and sew through the next nine A 15/0s. Pick up an A 15/0, and sew through the next few A 15/0s. These beads will shift to form the first two rounds of beadwork as the next round is stitched.

2. Working toward the wide end of the spike, work four rounds of tubular peyote stitch with A 15/0s for a total of six rounds of beadwork.

3. Exit any bead in the last round, cross over the end of the spike, and sew through the opposite A 15/0 in the last round. Cross back over the end of the spike, and sew through the A 15/0 next to the A 15/0 your thread exited at the start of this step (figure 1).

4. Repeat step 3 until you have sewn through all the A 15/0s in the end round (figure 2). This snugs up the round so it cups the end of the spike.

5. Pick up an 8 mm pearl, a color A 11/0 seed bead, and seven A 15/0s. Sew through the A 11/0 again, making a loop above the pearl, and keeping the pearl snug against the top of the spike (figure 3). Sew through the next A 15/0 in the loop. Continue through the loop, skipping every other A 15/0 so the skipped 15/0s pop out and form a diamond shape (figure 4). Sew back through the pearl, and sew through the A 15/0 opposite the one your thread exited at the start of this step.

6. Sew through the beadwork to exit a bead in round 5. Pick up a color B 11/0 seed bead, and sew through the next A 15/0 in round 5. Repeat this stitch to complete the round, and step up through the first B 11/0 added in this step.

7. Pick up three color B 15/0 seed beads, and sew through the next B 11/0. Repeat this stitch to complete the round, and end the threads.

8. String the spike dangle on a hoop earring finding. Make a second earring.
