This week, I finished sewing a set of Christmas stockings. I took pictures of my work in progress, then posted them on Facebook for my friends to see, only to have a few people hint that it was too early to be working on holiday projects. I was perplexed. I think most of my fellow seamstresses, crafters, and beaders would agree that October is prime time for starting gifts and decorations for December, especially since that month brings enough busyness of its own.
When do you begin working on holiday projects, beaded or otherwise? Do well-meaning friends ever accuse you of working too far ahead of the season?
For those of you who are working on holiday projects or hoping to get started soon, our December issue hits newsstands November 2 and will arrive in subscribers' mailboxes even earlier. We're especially excited to reveal ornament #2 in our series: a beautifully embellished glass globe (right) by Cathy Lampole. I'm also looking forward to showing off my December Spotlight design, a holiday-themed necklace featuring a bead by polymer clay artist Jennifer Morris, who was the subject of our October 2009 artist profile. Look for my necklace in the December table of contents.
And if you're still working on Halloween projects, no sweat! Make sure to check out Collette Hunt's "Going batty" free bracelet before October 31!

Well, since I have a 3-year old and a full-time job (which involves beads, no less!), I don't think October is too early! It sounds just about right!

I've always thought that July is the perfect time to work on all things Holiday. I just don't tell anyone I'm doing it.

I make ornaments every year for gifts to my family. 2010 will be my 11th year. I usually start designing in my head about Oct of the year before. I actually start beading them usually in March. Sometimes, it takes me until Dec. to get them all done depending on the pattern, or if I change the design once I start working. But everyone seems to understand that I work on them most of the year. Of course I have to ship them out by Dec. 1st.

As others have said, depending on the complexity of the project, I might start in June or July. For selling Christmas jewelry, August is usually good. I hate being crammed for time on the deadline.
