The thrill of seeing something you made

I didn’t realize how excited I would be to see my own project in print until the December issue arrived on my desk earlier this month. Every day I work on jewelry projects that go into the magazine or online, most of which are designed by other people, so seeing something I made should be old hat. But as a I flipped through the December issue, I must have forgotten that I’d made the “Polymer pod pendant” that appears on page 90. When I opened to the page, I almost squeaked out loud. There it is!

I made the pendant in response to a challenge I set for myself. I wanted to incorporate beads into a polymer clay piece of jewelry. So often we use one material or the other, but I wanted to use both. As the main focus of the piece, I wanted to showcase the dazzle of gemstone and crystal briolettes, the glow of pearls, the shine of daggers, and the frosty matte of drop beads… and polymer clay seemed the best foil for this design.

What beading challenges have you set for yourself and ended up surprised and delighted with the outcome?
