It’s hard to get more straightforward than a title like Jewelry Designs with Art Glass Beads. This special issue is all about designing jewelry pieces with artisan-crafted glass beads.
But if I was a newsstand browser unaffiliated with Bead&Button, there’s something I would like to know (and that I think you should know) about Jewelry Designs with Art Glass Beads: You don’t have to use art-glass beads. Not even one.
Now don’t get me wrong, we love glass-beads and art-glass artists everywhere. In fact we partnered with the International Society of Glass Beadmakers to create this special issue and the beadwork competition behind it. Still, we know that art-glass beads are not in everyone’s budget, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
Which is why you should know that any of the designs in Jewelry Designs with Art Glass Beads can be adapted to whatever focals, accent beads, beaded beads, found objects, and other miscellaneous treasures you have in your stash. In fact, Bead&Button editors even made substitutions! When writing the instructions for “Waxing poetic” (right) by Joan Reeder Babcock, Managing Editor Julia Gerlach used a gemstone coin instead of an art-glass bead.
So please don’t be intimidated by the title of Jewelry Designs with Art Glass Beads, which hits newsstands October 20. Take a look at this sneak peek video, and you’ll find that the designs inspire and the techniques with challenge. As for the materials, what you use is between you and your budget.
