I love to travel almost as much as I love beading. I can spend hours planning a trip and researching all the interesting things to see on the way. Now that spring is just around the corner (we’re always hopeful in Wisconsin because we can get snow well into April), I’ve planned my dream trip to visit many of the bead stores around the state.
I used two tools to organize my route — the Shop Directory in each issue of Bead&Button and the “Find a Bead Shop” locator under the Resource tab at BeadAndButton.com.
If I make a counter clockwise circle around the state I can just about visit all the Wisconsin stores. I’ll need to make a few detours off the circle route, but you know it’s always worthwhile to check out a bead store. Starting in Milwaukee I’ll head north to Cedarburg, Port Washington, West Bend, Fond du Lac, Sheboygan, Manitowoc, and Green Bay. I’ll jog up into Door County for stores in Sturgeon Bay, Fish Creek and Ephraim. Then it’s back to Green Bay, DePere, and Appleton. I’ll head west to Steven’s Point, Wausau, Eau Claire, Chippewa Falls, and Menomonie before turning south to LaCrosse. From there it’s an eastward trek to Baraboo, Madison, Stoughton, Cambridge, Sun Prairie, Delafield, Brookfield, and Greenfield. At this point I’m back in the Milwaukee area but I still have to visit the stores to the south in Racine and Kenosha.
I’d love to take this trip, but for now I’m going to put it in my trips-to-take-in-the-future file. I think I’d need about two weeks to cover the estimated 920 miles and give myself enough time to shop for beads.
See if you can plan a beading expedition in your state. It’s a great way to meet many friendly beaders, check out different bead stores, and buy some interesting beads.
